Whalebone Junction Information Center

Whalebone Junction Information Center is operated by the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau in conjunction with the National Park Service.

Whalebone Junction is an area in South Nags Head where three main highways merge on the Outer Banks peninsula. US 64 is the highway connecting mainland Dare County and Roanoke Island to the Outer Banks peninsula. In contrast, US 158 connects the Northern NC mainland with traffic from Currituck County mainland to the Outer Banks peninsula. In addition, these two significant highways connect with US Hwy 12, which runs through three NC Counties of  Currituck, Dare & Hyde, which comprise the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

South Nags Head shares its borders with Cape Hatteras National Seashore. US Hwy 12 at Whalebone Junction starts on the west side of the Outer Banks peninsula and is the entrance of the Cape Hatteras Seashore.

Just past the entrance to Cape Hatteras National Seashore, you will see the Whalebone Junction Information Center on your right. There is a large parking lot, a large manicured lawn, in addition to a restroom building, and the Whalebone Junction Information Center building.

Inside the Whalebone Junction Information Center, A.K.A. Whalebone Junction Welcome Center, you will be greeted by friendly, knowledgeable staff that can answer questions and provide information on National Parks Campgrounds, ferry schedules, brochures, pamphlets, maps & more, free for your reference and to keep as mementos of your Outer Banks Adventure.

When collecting your brochures on Cape Hatteras Seashore, don't forget to collect your information on other National Parks and properties on the Outer Banks.
