There are two communities on Roanoke Island, the fishing village of "Wanchese" and "The Town of Manteo." Both of these communities are named after Native American historical figures that had a significant impact on the first English Colony.
Starting at the North end of Roanoke Island, which is an unincorporated portion of the Town of Manteo, you will start to encounter many of the Pet Friendly tourism destinations on Roanoke Island.
This Visitors Center allows pets on the grounds of the property but not inside buildings. Please clean up after your pets. The Alligator National Wildlife Refuge tours offered here are not pet-friendly.
The self-guided tours allowing a pet friendly option, of the Alligator National Wildlife Refuge, are encouraged and maps are available on location.

The Elizabethan Gardens recently celebrated its 70th year Anniversary 1952 -1921. Generations of visitors hold special memories of this English Garden on Roanoke Island. Dogs are welcome, Dog admission fee is $3.00

Roanoke Island Dog Park is free to use by residents and visitors, but registration is required. A current rabies vaccination certificate is required for registration. There are two sections in this dog park, one for small dogs, and one for large dogs.
As you come into the Town of Manteo there are still more pet friendly locations.

Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse is the only river lighthouse on the OBX!
You will enjoy exploring the Downtown Manteo waterfront area with your leashed pet. Leashes are not to exceed 6 feet in the Town of Manteo. Pets are not allowed inside the Lighthouse. Please kindly clean up after your pet.
