Whalebone Junction is an area on the Southern part of the Outer Banks peninsula where three main highways merge. US 64 is the highway connecting mainland Dare County and Roanoke Island to the Outer Banks peninsula. In contrast, US 158 connects the Northern NC mainland with traffic from Currituck County mainland. In addition, these two significant highways connect with US Hwy 12, which runs through three NC Counties of Currituck, Dare & Hyde, which comprise the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
South Nags Head shares its borders with Cape Hatteras National Seashore. US Hwy 12 at Whalebone Junction starts on the west side of the Outer Banks peninsula and runs through Cape Hatteras Seashore. South Nags Head is located on the east side of the Outer Banks peninsula on either side of Old Oregon Inlet Road that runs parallel and connects to US Hwy 12.
Pets are welcome on the beaches of South Nags Head year-round. Leash law requires that pets be leashed at all times. Owners are also required to clean up after their pets.
