Please remember, when visiting the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge that pets are not allowed on the West Side (Sound Side) of NC Hwy 12, as not to disturb the birds. For more information please see Outer Banks Pet-Friendly Places. Pets are welcome on the East Side (Atlantic Ocean Side) of NC Hwy 12 within the refuge.

Old Christmas in Rodanthe 2023

 MERRY OLD CHRISTMAS!

JANUARY 6TH 2023

Old Christmas has been celebrated on the Outer Banks of North Carolina for many many years. The small seaside village of Rodanthe, on Hatteras Island comes alive with the excitement anticipating the arrival of "Buck" and the Island traditions of this holiday.

Having such a long history including an extensive archive of images on this Rodanthe community event, there is truly little to add, other than a Google search will provide numerous results.

As Old Christmas is celebrated today and into the night, the true meaning of the holiday also known as the Twelfth Night, when the Kings arrived at the manger where Jesus was born, will conclude the Holiday Season for many.

Outer Banks Whitetail Deer near the Bodie Island Lighthouse

At dusk, when you are out looking at the Christmas lights this time of year on the Outer Banks of NC, don't forget to stop by the Bodie Island Lighthouse to see the historic nightly revolving light of the Bodie Island Lighthouse.

On the way, be mindful of the sides of the road leading to the Bodie Island Lighthouse, as you may sees a number of Island Deer. Whitetail Deer populate the islands of the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Kites Flying High at Wright Brother National Memorial

Tuesday, October 11th, 2022, was a beautiful day on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The sun was shining, and the wind provided the perfect conditions for flying kites.

Brightly colored assorted-shaped kites soaring high in the blue sky could be seen for miles as people approached the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina.

 
The weather conditions seen yesterday are a standard on the Outer Banks, which drew the Wright Brothers to this strip of beach dunes back in 1903. The Wright Brothers achieved the first flight on the Wright Flyer on this very spot of the Outer Banks on December 17th, 1903.

With the kites flying so high in the blue sky, it was like a reminder that in one month, Friday, November 11th, 2022, Veterans Day will be celebrated at the Wright Brothers National Memorial. In addition, Veterans Day is a free admission day to the public, so mark your calendar today.

Wright Brothers National Memorial is Pet-Friendly. Dogs must be on a leash not to exceed six feet. Please clean up after your pet.

Kill Devil Hills, NC Beach Driving Delayed as Red Flags Fly on the OBX

Red "No Swimming" Flags continue to fly along the dune lines of the Outer Banks. High Rip Current conditions are present throughout the Outer Banks. Please stay out of the water when red flags are present. Also, please keep your dog on a leash and out of the water as well.

Due to Weather conditions, in the Town of Kill Devils Hills, NC regular beach driving season has been delayed. To keep current on when permit beach driving will be allowed, and how to obtain your 2022/2023 Kill Devil Hills Beach Driving Permit, please see the official Town of Kill Devil Hills, NC website at:

Outer Banks Weather Conditions Demand Caution

Sand and Water on Road - Cape Hatteras National Seashore

Strong winds, rain, and ocean over-wash have left parts of North Carolina Highway 12 covered in sand and water. However, at the time of this post, North Carolina Highway 12 does remain open and passable. 

Currently, a road sign flashes the message "REDUCE SPEED" and " SAND AND WATER ON ROAD" as you enter the Cape Hatteras National Seashore beside the Whalebone Junction Information Center.

Please use caution when traveling on the Outer Banks today and stay aware of your surroundings. Expect delays as traffic speeds will slow to accommodate safe travel.

Outer Banks avoids the wrath of Ian / Beach Driving & Red Flags

 The Outer Banks was predicted to be in the path of Hurricane Ian that devastated Florida. Luckily the Outer Banks was spared the wrath of Ian and woke Saturday to a beautifully sunny day.

However, high rip current ocean conditions continue throughout the Outer Banks as Red "No Swimming" Flags fly high along the OBX dune lines. Ocean conditions are Dangerous. Please stay out of the water, and keep your pets out of the water.

Saturday, October 1st, 2022, is the first day of permit driving on the beach in the Town of Kill Devil Hills, NC. For more information on Beach Driving Permits (October 1st, 2022, until April 30th, 2023) and temporary Beach Driving Permits (14 days), please see the Town's official website at: https://www.kdhnc.com/997/Beach
