A variety of birds are wintering throughout the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

A large portion of the wintering bird population are located in or near the

Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge

Rodanthe, NC 27968

Please remember, when visiting the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge that pets are not allowed on the West Side (Sound Side) of NC Hwy 12, as not to disturb the birds. For more information please see Outer Banks Pet-Friendly Places. Pets are welcome on the East Side (Atlantic Ocean Side) of NC Hwy 12 within the refuge.

SEASIDE PHOTOGRAPHY captured this image of a number of bird species, on the west side of NC Highway 12 on Hatteras Island, between the Marc Basnight Bridge and Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge visitors center.
