Eight Renamed Places on the OBX!

Currituck Beach Lighthouse

What is now Roanoke Island was initially christened "Virginia '' in honor of Queen Elizabeth I by Governor White of the famed Lost Colony.

The renowned letters "Croa," referring to Croatan, carved in a tree as a message to Governor White, referred to what is now Hatteras Island. Croatan means "Talk Town" in Algonquian.

The Village of Avon on Hatteras Island was initially known as Kinnakeet. Kinnakeet means "That Which is Mixed" in Algonquian.

The Currituck Lighthouse is now officially known as Currituck Beach Lighthouse.

The Whalehead Club is now officially known as Whalehead in Historic Corolla.

Currituck Heritage Park is now known officially as Historic Corolla Park.

The Bonner Bridge, AKA Oregon Inlet Bridge, after 55 years of service, was replaced by a new bridge in 2019. The New Bridge is named Marc Basnight Bridge. In addition, a portion of the Bonner Bridge was saved and repurposed as the Bonner Bridge Pier, which opened to the public in October 2021.

In June of 2019, The Paws Park, a dog park in Kill Devil Hills, NC, opened to the public. On February 10th, 2022, the dog park was dedicated to Mary Quidley, a longtime Clerk of the Town of Kill Devil Hills, NC, who passed away and had played an integral role in developing the dog park. The Paws Park is now Mary's Paws Park.
