Starting at the Virginia state line: North to South
Much like the neighboring town of Duck, Southern Shores was developed by Dare County approving large Subdivisions, and the rest of the township has private beach access with permits issued by the town for property owners. There is no public oceanfront access in the town of Southern Shores, NC.
Dogs must be leashed year-round within the Town of Southern Shores, including beaches. From May 15th - September 15th, dogs are only allowed on the beach before 9 a.m. and after 6 p.m. You must always clean up after your pet. Driving on the beach in the town of Southern Shores is Prohibited at all times.
The town of Southern Shores has a 2022 beach nourishment project in the works, but a time schedule has not been posted at this time. However, the Town of Southern Shores has issued a statement that "the beach will remain accessible during construction."
There is a paved pedestrian path; parallel to Highway 12 that runs the length of the Town of Southern Shore, a little over four miles and north into the neighboring town of Duck. This path is inviting for a short or a long stroll.
On the west side of the peninsula, all sound front access property is privately owned. Luckily there are a few pet-friendly rental properties among them. The sunsets on the sound side are magnificently unforgettable.

In fact, the Volunteer Southern Shores Fire Department is hosting one of the Outer Banks Pet Events at the Southern Shores Volunteer Fire Department located at 15 S Dogwood Trail, Kitty Hawk, NC to benefit OBX Coastal Humane Society.
