The fourth Saturday of September is National Public Lands Day. This year National Public Lands day is September 25th, 2021.
First celebrated in 1994, National Public Lands Day continues to draw mass crowds interested in the National Public Lands of America.
On the Outer Banks, events are scheduled at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, Cape Hatteras National Seashore, and The Wright Brothers National Memorial.

Fort Raleigh National Historic Site

Location of the first English Settlement, Museum, walkways, earthwork, and more. Pets are welcome on the grounds but not inside buildings. Leashes not to exceed six feet in length at this location.
Cape Hatteras National Seashore

"Your pets are welcome at Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Do keep them leashed and under control at all times. Pets are not allowed on swim beaches or in the buildings. And, for other visitor's sake, clean up after your pet." Leashes are not to exceed six feet at this location.
The Wright Brothers National Memorial

Home of the first flight, the birth of Aviation. Leashed pets are welcome on the grounds, but not inside buildings. Leashes can not exceed six feet in length.
There is no admission fee at The Wright Brothers National Memorial on National Public Lands Day.
