If you wish to be informed what Personal Information we hold about you and if you want it to be removed from our systems, please contact us. In certain circumstances, you have the following data protection rights:

(i) You have the right to withdraw consent where you have previously given your consent to the processing of your Personal Information. To the extent that the legal basis for our processing of your Personal Information is consent, you have the right to withdraw that consent at any time. Withdrawal will not affect the lawfulness of processing before the withdrawal.

(ii) You have the right to learn if your Personal Information is being processed by us, obtain disclosure regarding certain aspects of the processing, and obtain a copy of your Personal Information undergoing processing.

(iii) You have the right to verify the accuracy of your information and ask for it to be updated or corrected. You also have the right to request us to complete the Personal Information you believe is incomplete.

(iv) You have the right to object to the processing of your information if the processing is carried out on a legal basis other than consent. Where Personal Information is processed for the public interest, in the exercise of an official authority vested in us, or for the purposes of the legitimate interests pursued by us, you may object to such processing by providing a ground related to your particular situation to justify the objection. You must know that, however, should your Personal Information be processed for direct marketing purposes, you can object to that processing at any time without providing any justification. To learn whether we are processing Personal Information for direct marketing purposes, you may refer to the relevant sections of this Policy.

(v) You have the right, under certain circumstances, to restrict the processing of your Personal Information. These circumstances include: the accuracy of your Personal Information is contested by you and we must verify its accuracy; the processing is unlawful, but you oppose the erasure of your Personal Information and request the restriction of its use instead; we no longer need your Personal Information for the purposes of processing, but you require it to establish, exercise or defend your legal claims; you have objected to processing pending the verification of whether our legitimate grounds override your legitimate grounds. Where processing has been restricted, such Personal Information will be marked accordingly and, with the exception of storage, will be processed only with your consent or for the establishment, to exercise or defense of legal claims, for the protection of the rights of another natural, or legal person or for reasons of important public interest.

(vi) You have the right, under certain circumstances, to obtain the erasure of your Personal Information from us. These circumstances include: the Personal Information is no longer necessary in relation to the purposes for which it was collected or otherwise processed; you withdraw consent to consent-based processing; you object to the processing under certain rules of applicable data protection law; the processing is for direct marketing purposes; and the personal data have been unlawfully processed. However, there are exclusions of the right to erasure such as where processing is necessary: for exercising the right of freedom of expression and information; for compliance with a legal obligation; or for the establishment, to exercise or defense of legal claims.

(vii) You have the right to receive your Personal Information that you have provided to us in a structured, commonly used, and machine-readable format and, if technically feasible, to have it transmitted to another controller without any hindrance from us, provided that such transmission does not adversely affect the rights and freedoms of others.

(viii) You have the right to complain to a data protection authority about our collection and use of your Personal Information. If you are not satisfied with the outcome of your complaint directly with us, you have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. For more information, please contact your local data protection authority in the EEA. This provision is applicable provided that your Personal Information is processed by automated means and that the processing is based on your consent, on a contract which you are part of, or on pre-contractual obligations thereof.

Beware the Sandspur

Sandspur photo by Seaside Photography
Late Summer has arrived and with it, the Sandspurs have developed into it's annual cycle of Spiky Spurs.

The Latin name for Sandspurs is Cenchrus. Sandspur plants are part of the grass family and actually look like grass in the beginning stages of it's growth. Sandspurs are also known as Buffelgrasses, Sandspurs and Sand Spur.

Sandspurs can be found all over the Eastern Coastal areas of the United States and Hawaii.

All though Sand is in the name of Sandspurs, sandy soil is not the only soil that Sandspurs grow. Sandspurs do thrive in the Sandy soil and create a more noticeable problem for people and pets in beachy areas.

Since late summer is the time that the spikey spurs develop this is the time to be aware and cautious. As you can see in the photograph the Sandspurs are starting to turn a purple color now. When they reach the full purple color they will fall more easily from the stem to attach to people and animals. When they turn a tan/brownish color and are fully detached from the stem, they become more troublesome and harder to avoid.

The Sandspurs can attach and puncture not only the skin of people by the pads of dog and cat feet as well. Not only does having a Sandspur hurt if it punctures skin, but it is also troublesome to remove. The best advise I have found is to use a cloth to cover the Sandspur to gently remove, that way you are not puncturing your fingers as you remove the Sandspur.

So if your going to be exploring sandy shores and trails, please remember to bring a handkerchief , bandana etc. just in case your run across some Sandspurs.

Also remember that even small puncture wounds require medical attention. Please clean puncture wounds with soup and water or hydrogen peroxide and apply triple antibiotic to puncture wounds. If a puncture wound caused by a Sandspur becomes infected please seek professional medical attention.

Sandspurs are even mentioned in one of the Pampered Pets Guide's Veterinarian articles:

"Also let's not forget about our local favorites the sandspurs! We see these little "spurs" stuck in paws, ears and sometimes the mouth (under the tongue!). To avoid sandspurs stay out of those tall grassy areas unfamiliar to you." Barrett Welch, DVM - Animal Hospital of Nags Head

Sandspurs in nature will leave with the first frost, and not return in full threat mode, until next year around this same time. By being aware you can avoid these spikey Spurs and know what to do if you run across Sandspurs out in nature.

"Tips for Beach Dogs"

Coastal Animal Hospital-Kitty Hawk

Dear fellow Dog Owners,

Welcome to the beautiful Outer Banks! It is a paradise to explore for both man and dog alike. Much of the fun is focused around the spectacular beaches and sounds, and while these areas offer many hours of fun for all, there are a few unique hazards that you should be aware of.

Heat Prostration

Every summer we see several animals that become seriously overheated. This is a potentially life threatening condition which can be easily avoided. It is important to remember that our canine friends cannot perspire as we do, so they rely on panting as the chief way to dissipate heat experienced by their bodies. In order to compensate for this one should always have fresh water available. Exercise should be limited to short intervals with close attention paid to their breathing patterns. When staying at the beach for extended amounts of time give them a place to lay in the shade. Breeds of dogs with shorter snouts or those with a history of respiratory or cardiac problems are even more sensitive to the effects of heat. And remember that even on overcast days it is possible for dogs to overheat in short periods of time. Lastly, never leave your pet unattended in parked vehicles.

Salt Water Ingestion

While romping at the waters edge some dogs will drink saltwater as if it were fresh water and in large amounts this can be dangerous. The most common effect of this is vomiting and diarrhea. Most time symptoms last a short while, but if they do not subside in a short time it is important they be evaluated by a veterinarian for dehydration. Severe dehydration has the potential to severely damage their internal organs, so be mindful of their drinking habits and make fresh water available at all times when at the water.

Surf Dangers

Waves breaking in the surf can be dangerous to our smaller companions. Cresting waves can pack quite a punch and cause your pet to develop musculoskeletal injury or worse, drown. It is important to watch them closely at all times when they are in the water and do not allow them to swim too far from land. Rip currents, which are powerful underwater currents going out to sea are dangerous to humans and dogs. Make it a habit to know the current beach report before heading down to have some sandy fun.

Be safe and have fun! And if you have any questions or concerns about your pet's health, please call one of the helpful veterinarians.
