FDA Peanut Butter Recall List April 10th 2009

The FDA, U.S. Food & Drug Administration continues to post a peanut butter recall list for humans & pets alike.

 As of April 10th 2009 there were 3,912 entries on this list of products containing Peanut Butter.

The Peanut Butter salmonella reports started in January of 2009 and products continue to be recalled and added to the FDA recall list.

Caliber's Easter Adventure

Caliber

Caliber is an American Bull Dog and is a resident of Historic Roanoke Island. April 12th 2009 was Caliber's very first Easter. Caliber is a lucky boy because when his human Mom, Amber & Dad, Brian go on vacation Caliber goes too. Caliber's sister, Pumkin the cat has to stay home.

Caliber goes on vacation to Buxton, NC on Hatteras Island at least 1 day a month to visit with his human family and animal friends.

Caliber just loves the Outer Banks, what a great place to live and play. Caliber woke up in Buxton on Easter Sunday and was so happy to realize the Easter Bunny found him there.

Caliber received a new water bowl filled with tennis balls, rope pull toys & a doggie treat! and lets not forget his Bunny Ears he so proudly modeled for us.

There will be a Low Cost Spay & Neuter Clinic on Saturday May 2, 2009 at the Dare County Animal Shelter, Manteo, NC 

 Applications are limited & only available at the Dare County Animal Shelter cost is:

Cat Neuter $15.00 Cat Spay $20.00

Dog Neuter $30.00 Dog Spay $40.00

Marina's Story

Marina was adopted from the Currituck County Animal Shelter in November of 2007.

She is an only pet that lives happily as a Pampered Pet in Camden, NC.

Her human Mom, Lyn brings Marina to lots of Outer Banks Pet Events to help support other animals in need of adoption.

Marina was a guest at the 2nd Annual Bark in Maple Park that took place on Saturday, October 11th, 2009. 

What a fun time she had with all the other doggies. Marina also won 2nd place for the original outfit category. Marina's Mom Lyn dressed her in a Mexican Sombrero and a custom poncho. 

Marina's last adventure was the 1st Annual Doggie Easter Treat Hunt also sponsored by the Animal Lovers Assistance League, Inc. that took place on Saturday, April 4th, 2009.

Marina won 1st place at the Doggie Easter Treat Hunt for the Best Easter Bonnet. You can read more about the Doggie Easter Treat Hunt.

"BO" takes residence at the White House

It has happened, the Presidential Family, has a dog and there is much press on the new addition to the family. 

Six-month old Portuguese water dog, "BO", has taken residence at the White House with President Obama and family.

DEBUNKING THE MYTHS ABOUT THE NEW CURRITUCK ANIMAL SHELTER

We're Clamoring for More Space NOW! Debunking the Myths about the New Currituck Animal Shelter.

NEED - Current Shelter is much too small to house the number of animals received and to provide even minimal services. It has 14 dog runs and 56 cat accommodations. Average daily numbers 28 dogs; 94 cats. Spring litters bring 150 cats. We have an 88% adoption rate for adoptable animals. Shelter rules allow for five days before pets may be euthanized. Why would you do this to your best friend who loves you? Increasingly pets must be euthanized due to lack of space. Expansion of the Currituck Airport will cause the demolition of the current Shelter.

FINACIAL - Contractors and building services providers have volunteered $1 million in donated labor & services to build the new shelter (valid for a limited time).

Low interest rate loans may be available to the county through the USDA Rural Economic Development Commission. Building NOW while building cost are low saves money in the long term. The Animal Lovers Assistance League, Inc. annually contributes approximately 30% of the operating cost of the Shelter.

VOLUNTEER SERVICES - 7 Paid part-time Shelter Staff. More than 250 non-paid volunteer members/donors PAY dues and make donations of money, services, & time to benefit the animals! ALAL Volunteer service amounts to over 1000 hours and more than $63,000 in donations to the county annually. 

 FACTS ABOUT THE NEW CURRITUCK ANIMAL SHELTER SIZE - Determined by the demographics of Currituck County and utilizing the formula of the American Veterinary Medical Association. DESIGN - Modern but not state of the art! Practical and offers services that meet the needs of a growing population of people & pets. In compliance with the many required state regulations & modern building design practices that help prevent the spread of disease. Use of "Green" building techniques. COST - Determined by building cost at the time of construction. They are lower now than anticipated later. A shelter slightly larger than ours in a nearby county cost $2 million in 2006. Building NOW will result in a long term savings. 

LOW COST SPAY/NEUTER CLINIC - A long-term cost savings by getting control of the ever increasing animal overpopulation. Many new shelters have them. Also revenue producing to help with operating cost. DOG PARK - Fun & Free use by the public. If the county hosts Eastern U.S. Dog Agility Competitions & Rallies, it can become an economic asset and built at no cost to the Currituck residents through the use of Occupancy Taxes.

OBSOLETE - According to statements by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and a national shelter architect, our current shelter is obsolete.

WINSTON TO BE TRAINED AS ASSISTANCE DOG! 

“Winston”  He’s a wavy haired, black and white little lab mix about 12 weeks old.

Well this guy has been chosen by New Life Mobility Assistance Dogs to train with them!

 A co-founder of this organization saw Winston while in the area on a fund raising mission and fell in love with him. He came back to the office and inquired as to how he could adopt the puppy and put him immediately into training.

Once we completed the paperwork and verified the organization’s status, it was unanimously decided by our staff to donate the puppy to them. “Winston” has taken the first steps toward becoming an assistance dog for people with disabilities which limit their mobility.

I intend to follow Winston on his Journey and provide you all with regular updates- hopefully including his “Graduation” and placement. Please check out New Life Mobility Assistance Dogs @ www.nlmad.org.

The mission of New Life Mobility Assistance Dogs is “Specializing in the rescue and training of shelter dogs to assist the disabled, providing both person and canine with a new lease on life” 

This organization is also sponsoring a fund raiser here on the OBX called Cycling the Carolinas. This event will be held May 16, 2009 and is named the 10-25 Dare/Currituck Beach Lighthouse Leg and is sponsored by Outer Banks Triathlon.
