We also wanted to let everyone know the reason we are unable to blog daily this year.
There are a number of Outer Banks Pet Specialty Retailers that after years of being dedicated to the Pets on the Outer Banks, have gone out of business. This has eliminated a number of weekly, monthly and annual Outer Banks pet events.

This years Pet Events include only 1 weekly Outer Banks Pet Event at Outer Barks in Duck, NC.
Also this year, this event does not have one day of the week scheduled so please call for details.

Princess Jezibelle and the Gift of Giving

Last December the Animal Control officer brought a pitiful looking senior dog into the office of our Currituck County Animal Shelter, shook his head and, as he handed over her leash to the Shelter Manager, remarked what an easy stray she was to catch because she couldn't run; she could barely walk. As the Shelter Manager, Laura Marquette, began to make out the new stray's paperwork, she noticed the broken and missing teeth, cataracts, a limp in her arthritic back legs, and that she had only half of one of her ears. When she looked back at the new arrival again, she realized that this unattractive looking dog was giving her a smile -- a crooked but big smile! Laura needed to put a name on the records. Mischievously, she chose Jezibelle. There was no room in the shelter, so where could this new arrival go? Jezibelle looked around the office, checked out a couple of spots, including the bathroom, and selected the cushioned wicker couch in the front lobby/office! As staff came through the lobby and paused to pet her, she gave each an affectionate kiss. Scratching her back brought that engaging crooked smile and a big tail wag. The staff was smitten!

The next day one of the regular dog kennels in the rear of the shelter became available and Jezibelle was moved into it. The following day she began to tremble and shake, wouldn't eat, and appeared to be quite sick. It was the Shelter Manager's day off but she was moved back into the lobby/ office where she could be more closely observed. She immediately reclaimed her spot on the cushioned wicker couch. Whenever a staff member would approach her, she again began to shake and appear to be sick. Not wanting to upset her, when it was time to leave for the night our thoughtful staff members picked up the couch with Jezibelle sitting on it and carried her, as if she were the Queen of Sheba, into the coziest room in the shelter, the bathroom! When the Shelter Manager arrived the next day and examined Jezibelle, she found that she was not sick at all. Jezibelle had manipulated the entire staff into returning her to the center of activity where she could meet and greet and get petted by all who entered what she had now claimed as her fifedome,the shelter lobby!

Months passed and no one seemed to want to adopt a friendly 12 year old dog with a gray muzzle, broken and missing teeth, cataracts, part of her ear missing, and limited mobility. From the outset Jezibelle had taken it upon herself to become the official greeter and mascot of the shelter. Anyone who entered, human or animal, got the crooked Jezibelle smile and a friendly lick or kiss. Her days were spent divided between greeting, surveying her subjects, and sleeping on her couch in the lobby office. Evenings were spent unsuccessfully searching for dog treats. One morning the staff walked in to find one of the treat boxes empty --and Jezibelle smiling, wagging her tail, and giving a big burp! Treat boxes are no longer left on the Manager's desk at the end of the day.

By Father's Day Jezibelle had completely endeared herself to everybody and, because she surveyed most of the days' activities from the vantage of her couch throne, she gained the title of Princess Jezibelle. For a special Father's Day Adoption Weekend, it was advertised in the newspaper that anyone who came to the shelter to adopt a pet could adopt at a discounted price if her highness Princess Jezibelle deemed a person worthy of her favor and licked the person's hand. If she greatly approved of the adopter by favoring him with her kiss on his cheek, she decreed that one of her specially selected stuffed animal toys would be granted to accompany the adopted pet. We had a good weekend and Jezibelle, of course, licked every hand and gave everyone kisses. More animals than usual went to new homes that weekend, but not Jezibelle.

Some of our young animal lovers collected items for our shelter animals from their neighborhoods or had birthdays celebrated by young friends bringing gifts for the animals for the birthday celebrant. There to greet each child and check out their lobby filling treats and give a lick of appreciation is Jezibelle, complete with her sun shade and sun glasses to help with her cataracts.

A recent trip to the veterinarian has brought her some increased mobility thanks toprednisone. This is a dog who is living out her life as she may have been destinedto live it -- by giving the most important gift of all to to everyone she meets --the gift of joy and love!

WAGS & WHISKERS GALA was a SUCCESS!

The WAGS & WHISKERS GALA was a SUCCESS!

The event was a fundraiser for the five Dare County and Currituck County non-profit animal organizations. The organizations are The Friends of Pooh, Coastal Humane Society, Outer Banks SPCA, Feline Hope and Animal Lovers Assistance League. Over 300 animal loving people attended and enjoyed the music of The Crowd and Kim Kalman. They were also were thrilled by the performance of Felvis, the female Elvis, and were generous in the silent and live auctions. We expect to net over $25,000 to benefit the non-profit organizations.

Outer Banks SPCA "Special Funds" Donations

The Outer Banks SPCA has "Special Funds" for donations to help animals on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

When making donations this Holiday Season to the Outer Banks SPCA please note in your check memo if there is a fund that you wish to have your funds allocated too.

The Following are the Special Funds set up through the Outer Banks SPCA:

Medical Care Fund

Gifts support medical care for seriously sick & injured animals during their stay at the Dare County Animal Shelter. Each year we assist animals suffering from fractures, infectious deceases, heart worms, and life threatening conditions.

Spay/Neuter Fund

Millions of dogs & cats are euthanized in United States animal shelters each year due to overpopulation and lack of resources and adopters. In response to the crisis, the Outer Banks SPCA , in collaboration with local veterinarians, provides subsidized spay/neuter for cats and dogs in their care.

Adoption Fund

The Outer Banks SPCA constantly sees "forever homes" for the 25-50 dogs & cats in the Shelter at any given time. Funds help defray cost of medical evaluations, food, and the work of the Shelter Staff with animals and adopters to ensure a successful transition into the family.

Shelter Improvement Fund

Rehabilitated in 1988, the Dare County Animal Shelter was formerly a garage. Gifts to this fund provide for continued upkeep on this aging facility and will one day help support renovation or replacement with a progressive facility that sets the standard for animal care on the Outer Banks.

Community Education Fund

The Outer Banks SPCA provides educational publications, seminars, presentations, and workshops in local schools and for the general public to promote a humane environment for animals, residents and visitors.

The Outer Banks SPCA operators of the Dare County Animal Shelter have made it possible for Dare County Residents to Download 201o Dog License Forms online.

If you don't have time to go by the Dare County Animal Shelter in Manteo, NC on Historic Roanoke Island, you can now download your pampered pets dog license online and mail it in.

Please be sure to have your pets current rabies vaccination certificate on hand with your veterinarian information.

Let's Keep Our Pets Safe, Happy & Healthy this Holiday Season!

Dear Pet Owners,

We would like to extend warm wishes to everyone on the Outer Banks this holiday season. As we celebrate with family and friends, let’s be sure to keep some important safety tips in mind for our furry family members. One way to be sure our pets have an enjoyable season is to do our best to eliminate potential hazards.

Plants

Poinsettias, Holly, Mistletoe and Christmas trees set the tone for our holiday decorations, but we must be sure to keep these out of reach of pets. Poinsettias, although not as poisonous as once thought, can cause irritation to the mouth and stomach leading to vomiting. Holly berries contain toxins called saponins, which leads to vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy. Be sure to keep mistletoe up where it belongs and out of reach of pets. It has many different varieties, but all are toxic to pets. Mistletoe can cause vomiting, liver failure or seizures depending on the variety.

Ever wonder why cat collars have a quick release? Christmas trees come to my mind! Cats love to climb these green jungle gyms, and their collars can get hung up on branches. It is best to keep cats and dogs away from the Christmas tree unless supervised. Other hazards include chewing and/or swallowing ornaments and drinking the water under the tree. Often times insecticides, preservatives and fire-retardant chemicals sit in the water feeding your Christmas tree. It is important to keep pets away from the tree either by using baby gates or closed doors unless supervised.

Electric Cords

Extension cords are used much more often this season and can be attractive to teething puppies or playful cats. Be sure to keep all extension cords unplugged or out of reach when pets cannot be supervised.

Ribbons and Tinsel

Strings and ribbons are often some of our cat’s favorite toys, but they can be dangerous if swallowed. The material can obstruct or slice through the gastrointestinal tract causing serious consequences. It is important to keep these decorations out of reach of our pets.

Holiday Food

It is often tempting to feed Fluffy or Fido bits of the holiday meal, but feeding pets foods that they are not used to eating can cause serious stomach upset or pancreatitis. It is also important to not feed leftover bones to pets due to the fact that they can lacerate or obstruct the gastrointestinal tract. Some foods that are toxic to pets include chocolate, onions, raisins and grapes. This is not a complete list but is just a few of the foods pets have access to over the holidays.

Guests / Holiday Parties

Be sure that all pets have a safe, quiet place of their own during holiday get-togethers. These times are often very stressful for pets and can lead to behavior issues if they can’t get away from the commotion. It is also a good idea to keep your pet in a safe place during parties as it can be easy for them to run away with guests coming and going.

Even when all of the proper precautions are taken, accidents can still happen. Please do not hesitate to call one of the veterinarians on the Outer Banks if you have any questions or concerns about your pet.

George's Adoption Story

I just saw a picture of Sam http://pamperedpetsguide.blogspot.com/2008/12/sam-finds-his-forever-home.html the adopted Pekingese. He looked so much like my George. I adopted George in 2005, he was only 1.5 years old then, and had already been in 4 homes including his foster home. I thought I was making a mistake at first, 4 homes there must be something wrong with this guy.

He just had bad luck and no one who was willing to give him a chance, his first owners were military and got orders,the people who bought their house took him with the intention of finding him a new home, found him one, didn't last, the lady gave him back. Then a few weeks later she wanted him back, they gave him back to her, she decided he was too much with her other dogs she already had, he ended up in a foster home for awhile, then finally me.

He has been the most wonderful guy, we all love him so much, and he truely brings us so much happiness, he even loves our cats. My mom made him his own blanket when I got him, he is like her 5th grandchild. I could not imagine not having him.

People really need to consider their circumstances before getting any pet. They have feelings, they feel happy, they feel afraid,they feel lonely, they feel rejection. Pets are living creatures not things we can return to the store when we don't want them.

ANIMAL LOVERS ASSISTANCE LEAGUE RECEIVES $10,000.00 GRANT FROM PETSMART CHARITIES® TO SPAY/NEUTER 164 PETS

The Animal Lovers AssistanceLeague, Inc., received a $10,000.00 grant last week from PetsMart Charities to increase its number of spay/neuter operations for animals being adopted from the Currituck Animal Shelter by nearly 250%.

The Animal Lovers Assistance League, which operates the Currituck County Animal Shelter, can currently afford to spay or neuter only a small percentage of the cats and no dogs prior to their being adopted from the Shelter. In most cases a person who is adopting an animal from the Shelter receives a pre-paid voucher, which is covered by the adoption fee, that is valid to pay part of the cost of getting his new pet spayed or neutered. Thespay/neutering of animals is in keeping with nationally recognized programs of controlling pet over population.

The Currituck Animal Shelter, which is undersized to meet the needs of one of the state's fastest growing counties, is proactively fighting the area's dire pet overpopulation problem. A requirement of the grant is that the Animal Lovers Assistance League (ALAL) ask Currituck county officials to provide matching funds for the grant amount, which they will be doing. This could lead to a very significant improvement in helping control local pet overpopulation.

According to Ginger Sikes, President of the Animal Lovers AssistanceLeague, "We are excited that this PetSmart Charities® grant will be a major help in starting to control the county's pet overpopulation problem. We hope that our spay/neuuter program will soon become a model for other agencies across the country."

"The Animal Lovers Assistance League's spay/neuter program is a great example of taking the initiative to improve the local community," said Susana Della Maddalena, Executive Director of PetSmart Charities."Targeted programs like these are the key to successful, low-cost spay/neuter in local communities. Cumulatively, they are making a huge impact on pet overpopulation nationwide."

The Animal Lovers Assistance League, which was founded in 2005, has received the Governor's Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service in the State of North Carolina and in 2007 Outstanding Non-Profit of the Year in Currituck County. Last month the Currituck Animal Shelter received a State of North Carolina Inspection score of 100%, and this in a year when new higher state standards, which required additional training, had been implemented in the state for the first time.

Loving Home needed for German Shepherd

Harry needs a Loving Home

Alot of you have met Harry. He is a five year old male German Shepherd. Harry is an exceptional German Shepherd that needs just the right home. Harry is a rescue that has been living with me for the past three months. Although unneutered he is very healthy.

I am looking for the perfect home for him. He is a very sweet boy that needs lots of love. I am requiring that Harry be neutered. He is crate trained, as a matter of fact he loves his crate. I will be doing a home visit prior to placing him. He loves to play ball, and he will truly bond very quickly to his new master. He is great with other dogs, although he prefers to not interact. I would prefer that he go to a home with no other dogs. Harry loves to be outdoors so I am requiring his new owners have a fenced yard. An electric fence will not apply. Harry was very neglected in his previous home so he needs alot of gentle care. I will be requiring monthly visits for the first few months. I have grown very attached to him, but I want Harry to get more attention than I can give him.

CURRITUCK ANIMAL SHELTER RECEIVES PERFECT STATE INSPECTION SCORE

A recent inspection by North Carolina Department of Agriculture, Veterinary Division, State Inspector Joe Blomquist of the Currituck County Animal Shelter,which is operated by the Animal Lovers Assistance League, resulted in a perfect score! Although the shelter lacks certain areas and rooms now required by the state of more recently constructed shelters, the inspection evaluated the conditions as they exist within the limitations of the current facility.

Areas that are evaluated are the: Structure; Primary Enclosures; Sanitation;Husbandry (includes adequate feed/water, food storage, personnel and ratio of personnel to animals, and animals' appearance); Records; Transportation of Animals;Veterinary Care. Also checked were utilization of recent protocols and procedures that are now required and have been implemented statewide. Members of the staff have attended these classes that have been held in various parts of the state. Vulcan Materials made a very generous donation of gravel that is now required to meet state standards. Being able to meet the new higher standards required by the state reflects very favorably on the dedicated efforts of the shelter staff to provide the best care possible for the animals at the shelter, and donations by numerous people and businesses.

Smitty finds a New Home!

Smitty is a Dachshund that was taken to the Dare County Animal Shelter operated by the Outer Banks SPCA when his single elderly human companion passed away.

Being a small community the word of Smitty's plight spread fast. There were a number of families ready to adopt Smitty. Smitty actually stayed at the shelter for a few weeks for the Outer Banks SPCA to assess the right placement for Smitty's new home.

Many of our readers will remember "Beau" a Long Haired Miniature Dachshund that celebrated his 19th Birthday on February 5th 2009 and later passed away on Saturday, May 30th 2009.

Adopting Older Pets November 2009

Older dogs and cats often face an uphill battle when attempting to be adopted from shelters or individuals. Let’s face it, everyone likes puppy breath and small, furry kittens. Many people adopt puppies and kittens on impulse because they are so irresistible, which can lead to its own set of problems when reality sets in. You do not see many lines of people clamoring to adopt a middle aged, border line obese dog or cat, who is sporting an attractive wart or two. But if we look closer we can find definite advantages and benefits to adopting senior pets.

In my mind, the biggest benefit to adopting older pets is that they are, for the most part, already trained. You do not have to go through the months and years of training and the long line of chewed remote controls or shoes, not to mention the near daily episodes of spiking blood pressure due to some behavioral quirk. You have an out of the box trained companion. Sure, they may not be able to retrieve a beverage from the refrigerator or do CPR, but they more than likely will not eat a hole through sheetrock and let you know when they have to go to the bathroom outside. Most senior dogs and cats do not want to stretch the limits of your sanity or wallet, they simply just want to be near you and be loved.

Another significant advantage is that they make excellent pets for older people. Most people in their 60’s, 70’s or 80’s do not want to or cannot meet the demands of a young, rambunctious puppy or kitten. There have been numerous scientific studies that conclude that people with pets live longer, have fewer medical issues and report a higher contentment level, than their non pet peers. To be perfectly honest, the advanced age of the pet can be favorable. There are many human seniors that may desire a pet in their mid 70’s but may not be able to manage one in their late 80’s-not a problem if you adopt a 10 year old dog or cat. Pairing senior pets with human seniors is a win-win scenario, with numerous benefits to both.

There are a few perceived setbacks for adopting older pets, which is evident by the disproportionate amount of older dogs and cats found in shelters all over this country. The most obvious setback is aesthetics. In our culture, we place high value on pretty things. Most of us don’t look as good as we did at 22 years old…well, the same thing goes for pets. But I bet if you had a choice of which to spend time with you would chose to be a friend with who you are now rather than the 20 year old. There are definite advantages to experience. Many people are worried about the potential financial burden if their senior pet develops a serious or expensive medical condition. To be perfectly honest, older pets will not live as long normally as younger pets. We do the best we can with what we have (ie what we are able to afford)and when that time comes to let that much loved companion go, I am sure they would be thankful for the months or years of companionship and love they had, that if not for you, they never would have experienced.

Bette Davis Tucker was adopted from the Dare County Animal Shelter operated by the Outer Banks SPCA. Her Mom is not sure of Bette Davis's age so her Birthday is celebrated on her adoption date of each year November the 5th.

Bette Davis Tucker is a resident of the town of Manteo, on Historic Roanoke Island, NC.

Wags & Whiskers Gala

Time is quickly approaching for the Wags & Whiskers Gala scheduled to take place Friday, November the 20th 2009.

Kevin and Robin Carey, owners of the Outer Barks, are organizing an event titled Wags & Whiskers Gala. The Carey’s won the use of the North Carolina Aquarium at a live auction in November and decided to donate use of the facility (complete with aquarium staffing and equipment) for a fundraising event. The Wags & Whiskers Gala will be held on Friday, November 20, 2009, 6:30 -10:30 at the North Carolina Aquarium.

The Wags & Whiskers Gala would bring all five animal welfare organizations together for the first time. This process could help to strengthen the voice of the animals via our group and might allow us to effect change on many levels for animals on the Outer Banks and Currituck. The event would benefit the following non-profit charitable animal welfare organizations:

1. Animal Lovers Assistance League (Currituck Shelter)
2. Coastal Humane Society
3. Feline Hope
4. Friends of Pooh Canine and Feline Cancer Fund
5. Outer Banks SPCA (Dare County Shelter)

The event is envisioned as an evening of music, band ‘The Crowd’, dancing, ‘Selvis’, female Elvis impersonator, heavy hors d’oeuvres, beer/wine service, silent and live auction and an educational forum for all non-profits to educate the attendees on their respective organizations. All proceeds after expenses would be distributed equally among the five organizations identified. Ticket prices are $45.00 single and $75.00 a couple.

November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month.

This National Pet Event is sponsored by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

There are many reasons a senior pet may end up in an animal shelter.

Many families are unable to care for their pets and have turn them over to animal shelters in hopes of finding them a new forever home. This is heart breaking.

Some senior pets are owned by single senior owners that have passed away, leaving loving companions all alone in search of a new home. We know of one such pet in our community that has found a new forever home and we will share that story with you this month.

Even though a lot of families will pick a young kitten or puppy from a shelter there are great advantages to choosing a senior pet. Most senior pets are already trained and tend to be calmer.

Senior pets still have a lot of love to share and should be consider when looking for a new addition to your family.

If you are considering a new pet please save the life of a pet waiting for a forever home in one of our area animal shelters.

The 4H Agility CLub Joins Greater Coastal Canine Academy

The Greater Coastal Canine Academy would like to extend a warm welcome to the kids of the Currituck County 4H Dog Agility Club.

We have had the homor of being asked to work with these young kids that share the same passion for there dogs as us adults do.

We began our first obedience class this past Saturday and it was alot of fun. Once these kids go through their obedience program we will begin their Dog Agility Training here at the facility.

Becky Kendrick a well accomplished AKC competitor will be working with the Dog Agility program.

If you know of a young person that is interested in working with their dog this is a great way for them to do so. For more information on the 4H Agility program please contact the Greater Coastal Canine Academy.

The Animal Lovers Assistance League, Inc operators of the Currituck County Animal Shelter are celebrating National Cat Day by offering Discounts and Free Gifts for all Cats and Kitten adopted on Thursday October 29th 2009.

The following announcement was issued by Ginger Sikes, President of the Animal Lovers Assistance League, Inc.

We are reducing our adoption fee that one day from $45.00 to $30.00 for unspayed/neutered cats, including kittens. Cats that have been spayed or neutered will be $70.00. And every kitty will go out with a stuffed toy and a free sample of excellent quality cat or kitten food plus a free Cat Care CD!

They also come with all of their age appropriate vaccinations, including a rabies vaccination if they are old enough.

10th Annual Howl-oween Costume Pawty to Benefit the Coastal Humane Society

The 10th Annual Howl-oween Costume Pawty! is a Fundraiser raffle to benefit the Coastal Humane Society.

This Outer Banks Pet Event was founded 10 years ago by Ms. Leslie the original owner of Salty Paws Homemade Biscuits,who was a very strong supporter of the Coastal Humane Society.

This annual Outer Banks Pet Event was continued by the second owner Ms. Stephanie and remains an Annual Outer Banks Pet Event to Benefit the Coastal Humane Society under the current ownership of Ms. Susan at Salty Paws Homemade Biscuits.

The Pampered Pets Guide was able to attend the 9th Annual Howl-oween Costume Pawty and take some wonderful photographs of this annual Outer Banks Pet Event. "Beach Bound Hound" taking training into Real Life

Greater Coastal Canine Academy has announced "Beach Bond Hound".

We are taking our training into real life. This new program is a six week class that takes us to a different location each time.

The beach, Home Depot, and the Outer Barks in Duck are a few of our designated locations.

This class is geared for dogs and their humans that have had some previous training, and are now ready to work in real life environments.

Some of the exercises we will work on will be meeting and greeting new people, sitting politely for petting, and passing dogs.This class will run on Saturday afternoons.

Space is limited to six dogs per class. If you have any suggestions on dog friendly places that we can run a class please let us know!

"Halloween: And Chocolate Can Kill Your Pet"

It’s Halloween time! And with it come lots and lots of chocolate. All kinds of chocolate from milk to baking chocolate are available for our pets to consume. And if enough is consumed it can kill your pet. As we all know, when children eat too much chocolate they can get kind of hyper. That is because chocolate contains two drugs of the methylxanthine family. One is caffeine and the other is theobromine. Both, in small amounts cause the little jolt we get from eating chocolate or drinking some coffee.

But if an overzealous dog or cat gets hold of too much chocolate, it can cause lethal effects such as seizures and cardiac arrest. The signs usually occur within 6-12 hrs post ingestion. Initially the pet can vomit and get really thirsty then become restless. They can progress to hyperactivity, ataxia (drunkenness), tremors and seizures. As the poisoning progresses, death occurs from heart arrhythmias and respiratory failure. Less then 2 ounces per kilogram of body weight of milk chocolate and 10% of this of baking chocolate can prove lethal. Remember, even less then this may not kill the pet but can cause severe illness.

Don’t panic if your pet eats a piece of chocolate. Remember, a 90 pound Labrador eating a milk chocolate bar is much different then a 4 pound Yorkie doing the same thing. Any consumption of dark chocolate should be taken more seriously since it contains much more of the toxins. If you know your dog or cat got into chocolate call your veterinarian. They will help determine if the exposure was significant and take the proper steps to avoid any problems.

7th Annual Free Pet Photo Contest Entry Call

This year Vol. 7 of the Pampered Pets Guide was distributed through out the Outer Banks Area and marks the 7th year of the Annual Outer Banks Pet Photo Contest.

This is a Free Pet Photo Contest open to all pets with photos taken on the Outer Banks of NC.

There will be a 1st, 2nd & 3rd place winner. The contest runs from April - April of each year as we publish every May. This years prizes are:

1st Place winner will receive a 16 x 20 beautifully hand painted watercolor (matted to size) or acrylic Pet Portrait of the winning pet, by artist Lee M. Mansfield of Hemingway Gallery

The 1st Place winner will also be pictured on the Cover of Vol. 8 of the Pampered Pets Guide
to be published May 2010.

"Certified Dog Trainer" defined by Greater Coastal Canine Academy.

Greetings, I decided write this in order to answer the all to often asked question: Are we certified trainers?

Our training staff consists of myself, and two other trainers, Jane, Becky and Mary. Both Jane and Becky combined bring over 30 years experience to Greater Coastal Canine. Becky being an Agility, Obedience, and a AKC competitor. Jane having completed a very extensive more than two year apprenticeship program here. Jane's natural ability to work with humans and their dogs is by far the best I have seen in all my years of training, both humans, dogs, and trainers. Mary manages our store! And does a great job! As far as my experience, well I am not one that can market myself as or being "Certified". The term holds no merit in my opinion. The term "certified" in the dog world simply means that a trainer passed a test, probably online, simply to use it as a marketing tool.

Although there are organizations out there that you can recieve a certification through, the reality is that:, Anyone can say they are a dog trainer! Pet Smart offers a six week course, you pass a written test and you are a dog trainer. The AKC offers a Evaluator Test that you take online and if you pass you are an evaluator for the AKC. BTW, I am an evaluator for the AKC. This means that I can offer the Canine Good Citizen program in my school. It does not mean I am a certified dog trainer. The American Association of Pet Dog Trainers offers similar memberships depending on how much money you want to spend to say you are a member.

My point being that none of these organizations actually visit your facility, watch you train, and see if you are what you say you can do by passing an online test. Becoming a dog trainer is not like becoming a doctor, lawyer or even a school teacher. Nothing is required to be a professional dog trainer. No years of experience, or education are required. I wish there was but there is not.

So pet dog owners really need to do your homework. Visit different training schools, ask questions, and watch others in the class. Talk to students enrolled. If a trainer does not allow you to watch a class, I would think twice before signing up.

In my opinion there is a need for more good trainers. But are my trainers "certified" NO! My trainers are experienced, dog knowledge, trainers. My trainers have a real passion for what they do. My trainers have a strong desire to see that all humans and dogs accomplish whatever goal they set, be it manners or competition obedience.

I hope that this information will help to clarify something that really in my opinion needs to be made a little more public in the dog community. Misrepresentation! So, pet dog owners, beware!Ellen Carey, Greater Coastal Canine Academy

Bark in Maple Park Follow-Up

The Bark in Maple Park was a success in spite of threatening weather and heavy rain in the Moyock , Ranchland, Grandy, and other areas of the county. Some of those planning to attend called me after I got home from the event and said that they were sure that we had postponed it due to rain and what time would we be starting on Sunday. It's unfortunate that some people and their dogs missed a fun day but In the future, if people are uncertain about the weather, we hope that they will callthe shelter (457-0011) or listen to the radio. A shower sent us scurrying just as we ended the last event.

We really appreciate the help of our distinguished judges, County Commissioners John Rorer, Paul O'Neal, and Barry Nelms; Sheriff Susan Johnson; and Barbara Trainor. With their tape measures in hand to measure the Longest Tail, Longest Tongue, and Longest Ears; and their calculators as they counted the Most Spots, everybody had a great time! First place winners even received an Olympic style neck ribbon with a medallion! And every dog was a winner and received treats, a ribbon, and a certificate. The dogs seemed to prefer the treats. Some of the really big dogs, such as the Great Danes, took their owners on a merry run to fetch the dog shank bones that the Girl Scouts hid around the field. A new feature that was a big hit with the dogs was a Hot Dog Bob. We have to remember to let the little dogs go first next year!

Our Silent Auction was a huge success thanks to the generous high quality donations of many local businesses and individuals. The beautiful Grand Prize in our raffle, a hand-made quilt featuring dogs which was made especially for our League by Cindy Mattingly, is still available for purchasing raffle tickets. The drawing will be held approximately Dec. 15, to give everyone a chance to win this prize that everybody wanted in time for Christmas!

Many thanks to all of those who made our Third Annual Bark in Maple Park a success. Our sponsors Chesapeake Bay Helicopters/Phyllis Kohler, Owner and President; of the Bank of Currituck; Dog Nutz of Corolla, who also donated the gourmet treats for the small dog prizes; Connie and Richard Eckhart represented by Libby Newbern; Debbie and Cameron Tabor. They also donated many of the treats for the medium and large dog prizes. Our thanks also to the Currituck Dept. of Parks and Recreation for getting the field and pavillion in excellent condition.

The Currituck Sheriff's Dept. K-9 Unit under the direction of Deputy Bryan Dudley gave a demonstration of fugitive apprehension. The dogs in the K-9 program under go extensive training.

Animal Lovers Assitance League, Inc. will be sharing with you in the next few days some of the pictures taken on the field by photographer Thom Spagnol. Our appreciation to Thom and to professionalpet portrait photographer Laurie Stuart of Kitty Hawk, who took outstanding dog portrait photographs that some people ordered as Christmas cards or seasonal notecards. Mike Zimmerman made a wonderful Santa, patient and kind!

Our supporters donated a delicious assortment of home-made baked goods, which we greatly appreciate. We also appreciate Pilmoor United Methodist Church and Bob Kohler and the American Legion loaning us tables and chairs.

Dogs that came dirty left clean, thanks to our Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. TroopLeaders are Rusty Waldrop and Michelle Santa.

Rivaling Rembrandt, Carrie Brennan and her friend, Brittany Elliott, did some neat face painting.

To produce an event of this magnitude takes thousands of hours of work from a multitude of dedicated volunteers. The Fun Dog Show, in which every dog is a winner, has a category for every dog: Happiest Tail Wagger; Longest: Ears/Tongue/Tail; Most: Spots/Wrinkles; Best Owner-Dog Look Alike;Best: Dressed for Halloween/a Night on the Town/Sports/Motorcycle Rider/Law Enforcement/Military/Mythical Characters; Best: Nourished/Kisser/Behaved/Dancer on 2Legs/Smile/Personality; Friendliest; Longest Sit-Up; Curliest Tail; Biggest/Smallest Dog; Shortest Legs; Most Regal Appearance; Cutest; and others! All dogs must be well-behaved, have a current rabies vaccination, and be on anon-flex leash. Registration begins at 11:00 AM and the show finishes at 3:30 PM. This event, which is presented by the Animal Lovers Assistance League.

"Yappy Happy Hour" is today will continue every Saturday from 10:30am - Noon through Thanksgiving 2009. So, mark you calendars and join in on all the fun.

The World Famous, 10th Annual "Yappy Happy Hour!" is held at Outer Barks, located at 1171 Duck Road, in the Scarborough Lane Shops in Duck, NC.

This family fun pet event includes complimentary treats such as frozen Doggie Daiquiris & Arf D’ouevres for your pampered pet. There will also be (refreshments and munchies) for the humans inside the store at the same time.

The Animal Lovers Assistance League, Inc. has scheduled Saturday October the 10th with a rain date of Sunday October 11th to celebrate the 3nd Annual "Bark in Maple Park." This event will take place at the Maple Park located beside the Currituck Regional Airport in Maple.

The main event being the "Fun Dog Show" starts at 11am. There is a $5.00 entry fee to particate in the Fun Dog Show. This is a fundraising event to benefit the Currituck County Animal Shelter.

Greater Coastal Canine Academy training facility located at 111 Fox Knoll Drive, Unit 4 in Powell’s Point, NC has sent out the following News Release on the New "Bark Avenue" area in the facility.

Greetings from "Bark Avenue" I know that alot of you have already visited Bark Avenue, but if you have not seen it yet you have to come for a tour. "Bark Avenue" is our new day care facility.

Opening in just a couple of weeks, we expanded 800 square feet to offer a fabulous place for your dogs to stay if you need to go shopping, to the beach, or just want to bring your dogs for a great time.

Our theme is nothing short of Walt Disney Worlds Main Street. Each dog can have his or her own condo when not playing in our new playroom. Toys, treats, playtime and spa services are all available during your dogs stay with us.

Low cost rabies vaccinations will be available for Dare County resident pets at the Dare County Animal Shelter October 5th 2009 through October 10th 2009.

The Dare County Animal Shelter is located at 1031 Driftwood Drive in the town of Manteo, NC on Historic Roanoke Island

Bring your dog or cat in during regular business hours.

Monday, October 5th through Friday October 9th, from 8:30am until 5pm

(7pm on Wednesday) and from 9AM until 2PM on Saturday the 10th.

Kevin and Robin Carey, owners of the Outer Barks, are organizing an event titled Wags & Whiskers Gala. The Carey’s won the use of the North Carolina Aquarium at a live auction in November and decided to donate use of the facility (complete with aquarium staffing and equipment) for a fundraising event. The Wags & Whiskers Gala will be held on Friday, November 20, 2009, 6:30 -10:30 at the North Carolina Aquarium. The Wags & Whiskers Gala would bring all five animal welfare organizations together for the first time. This process could help to strengthen the voice of the animals via our group and might allow us to effect change on many levels for animals on the Outer Banks and Currituck. The event would benefit the following non-profit charitable animal welfare organizations:

1. Animal Lovers Assistance League (Currituck Shelter)
2. Coastal Humane Society
3. Feline Hope
4. Friends of Pooh Canine and Feline Cancer Fund
5. Outer Banks SPCA (Dare County Shelter)

The event is envisioned as an evening of music, band ‘The Crowd’, dancing, ‘Selvis’, female Elvis impersonator, heavy hors d’oeuvres, beer/wine service, silent and live auction and an educational forum for all non-profits to educate the attendees on their respective organizations. All proceeds after expenses would be distributed equally among the five organizations identified. Ticket prices are $45.00 single and $75.00 a couple.

Hyde County sets up donation fund for the Hyde County Animal Shelter

Hyde county has set up a way for the Hyde County Animal shelter to receive donations without the money going into the general operating fund.

This money will be used for the county animals housed at the shelter. Checks should be made out to Hyde County Animal Control, and directed to the County of Hyde, Finance office, PO Box 188, Swan Quarter, NC 27885

Non-cash donations should be taken directly to the Hyde County Animal Shelter, 9300 North Lake Road, Fairfield, NC 27826.
