Rip Current Dangers & Your Dog!

Rip Current Dangers & Your Dog!

If your dog is like so many of the water dogs that live or vacation on the Outer Banks you can’t keep them away from the ocean. It’s like second nature for them to dive in after a ball or just to cool off. *Our pets have a tendency to get excited and overdo it when they are playing in the water. Many dogs have drowned when playing in the water with a ball etc. they are preoccupied with the game and playing with you, and wind up getting into trouble because they get too tired. A tired dog can very easily fall victim to a rip current. Wearing a dog life jacket will give you the time you may need to rescue your dog from a rip current, or allow him to remain afloat and ride the tide back to the beach. Never take your pet to the beach to swim when you see red flags out. That is an indication that the rip current is to strong for swimming.

Coastal Humane Society - "Outer Banks Pet Food Bank"

Due to the current financial climate on the Outer Banks, the Coastal Humane Society, with the cooperation of the Dare County Social Services Department, established a “Pet Food Bank” for older adults in the community who need help providing adequate food and/or supplies for their pets. The Dare County Social Services Department graciously agreed to warehouse and deliver these goods and Coastal Humane promised to replenish the supplies throughout the year, as needed.

The program has been extremely successful and Coastal Humane Society has so far replenished the supplies four additional times. According to Social Services, their clients have been very appreciative of the assistance.

A California friend of Coastal Humane sent in a sizeable donation in honor of her 75th birthday and that donation has been dedicated to the Pet Food Bank. In addition, area retailers have given us a discount on a couple of orders.

However, each time we replenish the supplies, it costs between $200 and $250 (after the discounts) and the designated funds are diminishing and monetary donations would be greatly appreciated. The assistance appears to be needed to enable people to keep their family pets and we hope to be able to extend aid throughout 2009 and into 2010. If you would like to make a donation, please send it to:

Plastic Bag Ban on Outer Banks Retailers

North Carolina Senate has signed legislation banning plastic bag usage on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. North Carolina Governor, Bev Purdue signed this bill in to law in June of 2009.

This law went in to effect on September 1st, 2009.

Retailers on the Outer Banks of North Carolina with a square footage of 5,000 or larger or retailers with 5 or more outlets in the state are required to use paper bags with 100% recycled content or reusable bags.

The Counties included in this new environmental law are Currituck, Dare and Hyde counties.

However, retailers on the mainland of this counties would not be affected by this new law.

Townships affected by this law are

Currituck County the towns of (Corrolla & Sanderling),

Dare County the towns of (Avon, Buxton, Collington, Duck, Frisco, Hatteras, Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, Manteo, Nags Head, Rodanthe, Salvo, Southern Shores, Wanchese and Waves)

Hyde County the island of (Ocroacoke).

This new law will be enforced by the Department of Environmental and Natural Resources.
