Storm & Disasters Guidelines for Pet Owners

The Outer Banks S.P.C.A. welcomes you to Dare County on your visit or vacation and wants to pass on some basic tips for preparing for a weather related disaster.

Yes, you have come to paradise but here on the Outer Banks we are in an area prone to hurricanes and nor'easters throughout the year. If it is not safe for you to stay in a disaster area, it is not safe for your companion animals.

The Outer Banks SPCA recommends that you plan accordingly for an emergency before and after the event by following a few guidelines to help not only you but your pet to remain safe.

1. Keep your pets up-to-date on all required shots. It helps if you have a copy of the pets medical records with you while you travel.

2. Have your pet mico-chipped and properly registered.

3. Be sure your pet wears a properly fitted collar with an identification and rabies tag. The Outer Banks SPCA provides "Safe Pet Vacation" kits at various locations throughout Dare County.

4. Prepare a kit with a week's worth of emergency supplies such as food, medication, leashes, harnesses, carriers, bottled water, cat litter, bedding and your pets favorite toys.

5. Keep a current photograph of you & your pet with your emergency kit.

6. Emergency veterinarian contact information.

7. Leave difficult or nervous animals in special crates & carriers.

8. Contact the local Animal Care & Control Agency or SPCA in case your pet gets lost.
