The Importance of Spaying & Neutering your Pets

Animal Hospital of Nags Head
This is a very important subject that everyone should be well educated on when owning a pet. There are many reasons to spay or neuter your canine or feline friend; most important is a long healthy life.

A female spayed before her first heat eliminates the chance of ever getting ovarian cancer and greatly reduces the risk of breast cancer. Also, a neutered male dog has eliminated his chances of ever getting testicular cancer.

Moving on, let's not forget all of the feline and canine companions that get put down each year due to overpopulation. Contrary to most beliefs, one fourth of all shelter dogs are pure bred. These numbers could be greatly reduced when a pet owner has their pet spayed/neutered.

For those wanting to have their animal spayed/neutered, but lack the funds, remember your local shelter and other non-profit organizations are out there to help us fight this battle of overpopulation. For more information on this contact your veterinarian.

Currituck County Animal Shelter receives Generous Holiday Donations

The Animal Lovers Assistance League, Inc. operators of the Currituck County Animal Shelter would like to Thank all of the donators who gave so generously this Holiday Season!

The following are just a few. Haley (not pictured) came from Virginia Beach with treats and to walk several of our dogs, such as Peebles. Volunteer Barbara Eggleston (left) brought many items including dog toys and treats that were deposited in the Dollar Tree Shelter Donation Box in Moyock by generous shoppers there, plus she added some linens of her own.

Curly is obviously giving her a big kiss of appreciation for bringing all of this to his temporary home at the shelter! Shelter Manager Laura Marquette (center) shows the puppies what they will be eating, but no time soon with those little mouths!

Janet Land (right) delivered some of the giant-sized bags of dog food that were donated by the generous shoppers at the Food Lion in Moyock. This is just one of her many deliveries of food, cleaning supplies, and pet treats and toys that is being contributed by the shoppers at Food Lion in the Animal Shelter donation box.

Not pictured - Deborah Brown, Manager of the Dollar Tree in Moyock, wheeling in a much needed extra washing machine that she and her husband Robert Brown donated plus many bags of linens, cleaning supplies, kitty litter, and pet toys that were donated by the very kind shoppers at Dollar Tree and by Deborah Brown; and the donation check for $1,700 to the Animal Lovers Assistance League from Pedigree, the manufacturer of quality pet foods.
