Meet Officer L. Gilreath Animal Control for the Town of Nags Head

Officer L. Gilreath has been an Animal Control Officer for The Town of Nags Head, NC since April 2008. She feels that education is a huge aspect of her profession and hopes to help pet owners understand the importance of the Town of Nags Head's animal ordinances and laws.

Officer Gilreath feels for the most part, pet parents in Nags Head are very responsible, the only frequent complaint she gets is about dogs running at large.

Officer Gilreath stated that “It is important to keep a dog on its leash when off your property because as much as you love your pet, other people may not feel the same. 

The public has different experiences with animals and can be terrified of a small dog, or totally in love with it. It is also important to remember that your dog is more easily controlled if on a leash, you can prevent jumping on strangers or children. Also, remember to pick up poop. Not only is it gross to step in, especially on the beach, but is harmful to the environment and other animals.”

When asked about her own pets Officer L. Gilreath stated: "I am a true animal lover and have three dogs and a cat. My oldest is Chelsea, a 10 year old springer spaniel, the second is a 3 year old Akita, a 2 year old Himalayan, and a 8 month old Australian Shepard, so to say the least, I stay busy. My two oldest are rescue dogs and now live the life!!! "

The Animal Lovers Assistance League, Inc. and the Currituck County Animal Shelter currently has 47 kitties available for adoption. 

Outer Banks SPCA / Dare County Animal Shelter

The Outer Banks SPCA and the Dare County Animal Shelter currently has 15 kitties available for adoption. 

The Hyde County Animal Shelter currently has no kitties, but does have lots of doggies looking for homes.  You can contact the Hyde County Animal Control, JM Eakes, at 252-542-0807.

Feline Hope Animal Shelter, Inc.

Feline Hope Animal Shelter, Inc.

Feline Hope Shelter, Inc. was established in 1995 to provide food, medical care, and loving homes for homeless companion kittens and cats.

The shelter has existed solely through the work of dedicated volunteers and donations for admitting and adopting cats. Frequent fund raising events have generated cash to build a new shelter.

 Mission Statement Feline Hope Animal Shelter, Inc. is a non-profit, "no-kill", all volunteer organization dedicated to providing food, medical care, and loving homes for homeless cats.

Unique Features Feline Hope Shelter is a "no-kill" shelter that does not believe in the Euthanizing of healthy or treatable animals. When a cat is admitted to Feline Hope, it remains at Feline Hope until a good home is found.

Homes have even been provided for cats that have been tested and found positive for feline aids and feline leukemia. Feline Hope is a "free roaming" shelter. This means that the cats are placed in large areas with cat - walks, kitty condos, beds, and toys. They frolic with each other and keep each other company. There are windows for the cats to sit and peer outside and cat doors to the large enclosed decks outside for them to enjoy the fair weather.

Some cats are a little aggressive and do not enjoy being with other cats. Feline Hope has a list of volunteers who provide foster homes for these types of cats. Foster care is also undertaken for special circumstances such as medical needs, for young kittens, and when the shelter is full. Often, there is a waiting list for cats to be admitted to Feline Hope.

Statistics Feline Hope Animal Shelter, Inc. has taken in over 2,903 cats/kittens. It has adopted out 2,743(832 cats & 1,911 kittens). It has spayed/neutered 2,050 felines. These are awesome numbers for a very small group shelter. Feline Hope currently has 74 kitties looking for homes, some at the shelter and some in foster homes.

Volunteers & Business Supporters Feline Hope Animal Shelter, Inc. has clean up volunteers for the A.M. & P.M. daily. Feline Hope Animal Shelter, Inc. also has foster parents & maintenance volunteers.

Adoption activities are sponsored by local merchants like Mustang Sally’s, The Holistic Pet Shop and Outer Barks. There are also donation change cans, at a number of business sponsors on the Outer Banks of NC. That Change adds up and is great appreciated by the shelter.

Pig Pickin to Benefit the Outer Banks SPCA was a Success

October 19th 2008 proved to be a cold and windy day. But that didn't stop the “Pig Pickin Party,” at the Jolly Roger Restaurant in Kill Devil Hills, NC.

Everyone grabbed a jacket and the party went on; all to benefit the Outer Banks SPCA and the homeless animals at the Dare County Animal Shelter.

In addition to having a great BBQ meal, guest were entertained by the "Island Boy Band." The dancing took the cold away. 

Doggies came from as far away as New York to enjoy the fun. Some really special doggies that had been adopted from the Outer Banks SPCA and the Dare County Animal Shelter also attended.

Donations of Dog & Cat food were abundant and donations in general far exceeded expectations. There was also a raffle for a new pool table light, donated by Carol Ann, owner of the Jolly Roger Restaurant. Photo journalism of this event was covered by Carol at Seaside Photography. There are close to 200 images of this event. The print reproduction rights have been assigned to the Outer Banks SPCA and the Dare County Animal Shelter.
